چکیده

Abstract Truly autonomous robots, either as single units or in groups will be required to generate and manage their own energy. This paper explores the idea of robot ‘trophallaxis’ whereby one robot can donate an amount of its own internal energy reserve to another. Different strategies for energy transfer are considered within the test simulation scenario of a police 'search line' task. We look at the scenario in order to understand the effects of energy loss during energy transfer. We show that even when faced with very inefficient energy transfer mechanism, robot trophallaxis can confer considerable advantage for a group of autonomous robots.

Map-merging in Multi-robot Simultaneous Localization and Mapping Process Using Two Heterogeneous Ground Robots

In this article, a fast and reliable map-merging algorithm is proposed to produce a global two dimensional map of an indoor environment in a multi-robot simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) process. In SLAM process, to find its way in this environment, a robot should be able to determine its position relative to a map formed from its observations. To solve this complex problem, simultan...

Autonomy in Human-Robot Team Control

Human control of multiple robots has been characterized by the average demand of single robots on human attention or the distribution of demands from multiple robots. When robots are allowed to cooperate autonomously, however, demands on the operator should be reduced by the amount previously required to coordinate their actions. The present experiment compares control of small robot teams in w...

Toward Energy Autonomy in Heterogeneous Modular Plant-Inspired Robots through Artificial Evolution

Contemporary robots perform energy intensive tasks—e.g., manipulation and locomotion—making the development of energy autonomous robots challenging. Since plants are primary energy producers in natural ecosystems, we took plants as a source of inspiration for designing our robotics platform. This led us to investigate energy autonomy in robots through employing solar panels. As plants move slow...

Teaching Multi-Robot Coordination using Demonstration of Communication and State Sharing (Short Paper)

Solutions to complex tasks often require the cooperation of multiple robots, however, developing multi-robot policies can present many challenges. In this work, we introduce teaching by demonstration in the context of multi-robot tasks, enabling a single teacher to instruct multiple robots to work together through a demonstration of the desired behavior. Within this framework, we contribute two...

Design and Evaluation of a Multi-Robot Control Interface

Designing a human-machine interface for a semi-autonomous mobile multi-robot system is a challenging task. The requirements range from operating in a real time environment, facilitating asynchronous command execution to supporting the operator in dividing his monitoring and control resources among multiple robots. This paper presents the results of two simulations based multi-robot experiments ...
